Is China facing up to its economic problems?

Good morning.

Let's start the morning by talking about China because it's struggling it's got massive debt

youth unemployment and its property market is in crisis. The annual gathering of

China's ruling Communist Party is ending today and the country's leaders have been trying to convince the

markets and its people that they can jump start growth again. The BBC's

Stephen Mcdonald is watching from Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Hi Stephen.

Stephen, what did we get out of these meetings?

There's been a lot of focus on, you know, China, getting growth going again.

Was that addressed in any way?

I think that most observers, if they were going to be fair about it,

would say that this gathering was long on Communist Party rhetoric and pretty short on specifics.

The Premier saying that this is going to be a consumer-led recovery.

This is going to be achieved through better pay, through higher paying jobs for university graduates,

and that's important because young people have been finding it hard to get work.

There's going to be much greater emphasis on the tech sector, but how do you achieve those things?

There hasn't been a clear guideline from this meeting from either the press

conferences on the sidelines of the gathering or the documents themselves or the speeches

it's more just been come on don't worry trust us we're going to turn this around
