about editing a design magazine

about how designing a conference is similar to editing a magazine

and about why most designers don't seem to shine at TED conferences.

Probably because a lot of designers get very used to just clicking through their portfolio

and they think that that's what they do if they speak and that's not actually going to work.

Here's Debbie Melman.

Malcolm Gladwell calls them Connectors, the kind of people who seem to know everyone.

In the world of design, I think it's safe to say that

Chee Perlman is a super connector.

Over the years, her multifarious career has put her in frequent contact with designers of all

stripes. She began with ID magazine where she was editor-in-chief for seven years.

She has since served on countless juries and boards.

She's been deeply involved in the TED conference. On top of all

that, she runs her own business, She Company, which produces content for conferences,

magazines, films, books, exhibitions, award programs, and websites.

She joins me today at the School of Visual Arts in New York City to talk about it all.
