Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a U.S.

brokered ceasefire plan.

According to two Israeli officials, the ceasefire will take effect immediately after the

Israeli government approves the deal with Hamas, which is expected later today.

Those same officials say Israeli troops will begin their partial withdrawal from the enclave

straight away, and take

about 24 hours to finish.

Once that withdrawal is complete, Hamas will have 72 hours to release the hostages.

But it's worth noting that this is just the first phase of a ceasefire deal, and a senior

Hamas official told Qatar's Al-Arabi TV that a formal declaration for ending the war in Gaza must be made for any hostage release to take place.

The main point that allowed us to enter into this deal is that it ends the war.

And in announcing the agreement, none of the major parties have addressed key sticking points,
