Summary

On today’s Ruminant, recorded live from the pungent parking lot of a California West Marine, Yiddish terms are required to describe Jonah’s emotional state. With his daughter Lucy leaving home, he processes his grief by exploring John Rawls’ original position, existentialist movie-making, and why American popular culture is much more conservative than most people realize. Afterward, all sentimentality fades away as an epic rant on the situation in Afghanistan and the dismal state of American politics commences. Animated by unprecedented annoyance, Jonah argues that President Biden has revealed himself to be plainly unfit for office. But that doesn’t make Trump look any more appealing. Show Notes: -Nine Days, which plunged Jonah into an existential crisis -Philosophy 101 -Jonah’s pro-life ruminations -Sweet victory -The Remnant with Eli Lake -The Dispatch Podcast on Afghanistan -Jonah’s uncontroversial tweet which provoked nothing but love and praise Learn more about your ad choices. Hey, so it's Friday, August 20. I am sitting in my rental car in the parking lot of West, West Marine, the nautical supply chain in Newport Beach.

And my daughter is still up in the hotel room sleeping. My wife is working on a project and which is unusual because she should normally be asleep this hour. It is really in the morning.

And I'm just checking in where to begin. So I mean, I feel like nobody is dying to know what my position on Afghanistan is at this point if you've been paying attention to what my position is on Afghanistan.

1:32.0

I guess we can talk about a little that stuff later, but I figured it'd start with something else. That way if you are interested in the Afghanistan thing.

1:42.0

And some grief I've been getting and some airing of grievances for me stick around. But let's sort of start someplace else, I guess.

1:52.0

Yeah, so I mean California. I got to say I still really like California. Obviously, I hate the politics of the place. There's all sorts of things about the culture. I can't stand.

2:04.0

But I also think saying the culture in California is a little bit misleading. Sure, there is a California culture. But there's also like a France culture.

2:16.0

And that doesn't mean there aren't subcultures within it. And California is in many ways really like its own country.

2:26.0

It's big enough to be its own country, both economically and population wise, certainly geographically. And I don't know. I mean, every time I come here, I'm like, why don't you know, why don't I live here? Of course, I visit the parts that the most part that have wonderful weather.

2:44.0

I'm not, you know, I've been to death Valley, but I don't always say, hey, why don't we live here when I visit that valley.

2:52.0

I will say it's kind of amazing. I thought the smell of weed was getting bad and DC, but I mean, literally from the moment I walked outside of LAX, I could smell weed.
