In the previous part, Bertie's American friend, Corky, had asked his advice on endearing his new fiancé to his wealthy disapproving uncle. Jeeves was promptly consulted and suggested that the girl publish a novel on the uncle's preferred subject of birds.

This was such a successful plan that Bertie came back months later to find that the girl had in fact married the uncle and not corky, leaving Bertie dumbfounded.

Before we begin tonight's story, let's get ourselves ready for sleep.
