Summary

Hey all you cool cats and kittens! In this episode, Rob interviews none other than Netflix Show Tiger Kings Carole Baskin! Rob and Carole explore many different topics including the world of animal conservation, how she coped with the fame that came along with the Netflix show, her thoughts on Louis Theroux. Carole also responds to the many myths and lies surrounding her life including her money and her husband’s disappearance. KEY TAKEAWAYS  The fame the Netflix show brought to Carole was incredibly difficult to begin with. The first three months after the release she was harassed horrifically including threatening phone calls and even death threats. Despite this Carole believes that some good has come from it, the spotlight has been put on animal abuse and has allowed her to discuss the real issues around tiger and big cat conservation. Carole believes the producers of Tiger King did a great disservice to the big cat rescue community in the US. They didn’t truly represent the differences between actual big cat sanctuaries and those who were animal abusers. The timing of the Netflix show was imperative to its success. Carole is arguably the last person to blame for the covid pandemic yet the internet and viral memes that were created around the show were so focused on blaming her for it, as well as a whole host of other things! Something she finds amusing and bewildering now but it did affect her at the time, particularly around carrying out her conservation work. Human activities have caused the damage to the world we are seeing. Carole believes we need to stop polluting, stop eating animals and really think about the planet we are leaving behind for our children and grandchildren. The US’s culture of rebellion and personal independence means that the Big Cat industry is still thriving. To the outside world is seems like a crazy industry but many US citizens feel like they have the right to own any animals in the same way they have a right to bear arms. It’s a cultural shift that takes time and a lot of legislation to change. If Carole had her time again she doesn’t think she would change her mission. However, she found the impact the fame and negativity around the show was too much for her family to deal with, especially her daughter and husband. Animal abuse is to do with power. People who abuse animals do so to feel and show that they have power. If Carole had just 15 minutes to speak to Joe Exotic, she would just want to ask him why. Why does he want to put these animals in cages, why is he for private ownership of cubs and cats if he loves the animals as he says he does? BEST MOMENTS   “The first three months were hell, it was just amazing to me that people would watch a show about a ton of animal abusers and then believe the lies that were being told [by them]” “The Animal abusers, they can’t talk about the issues so they can only thing they can do is say hateful things” “It could have been so much more but instead was just wildly entertaining to people locked in their homes” “There shouldn’t have to be a place like Big Cat Rescue rescuing big cats from horrible situations. We should do away with those horrible situations upfront and put an end to it” “I like Disruptors because Disruptors are going to change the world” [Business, mindset, entrepreneur, disruptors] VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter   https://robmoore.com/podbooks  rob.team ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. It was just amazing to me that people would watch a television show about a bunch of animal abusers and then believe the lies that we're being told.

Hey, it's Rob Moher. Welcome to Disruptus. I'm very excited. In fact, my wife is very excited. My wife never watches me, never listens to me.

0:21.0

She said, Carol Baskin, tell Carol, we are team Carol. So we have here on the Disruptus show, Carol, Baskin, of course, famous from Tiger King.

0:32.0

Carol, thanks a lot for doing the show. Really appreciate it.

0:35.0

Well, hey, are you cool, getting kittens, especially your wife, who is such a cool kitten.

0:40.0

So, Carol, I've got to start by saying, how has the Netflix show Tiger King changed your life?

0:47.0

How was your life before and how is it now?

0:50.0

Well, yeah. The first three months were hell, and it was just amazing to me that people would watch a television show about a bunch of animal abusers and then believe the lies that we're being told by the animal abusers about the person who was trying to stop them from hurting animals.

1:11.0

And so, for three months, my phone just rang nonstop with people cursing and swearing and threatening me and threatening my family and telling me they wanted to burn the place to the ground and kill all the animals.

1:23.0

But one good side of all of this has been that because of the media attention, mostly wanting just to glum onto all of the hatred and pander to that in their audiences, it's given me the opportunity to actually talk about the animals and the fact that we are likely to lose the Tiger in the wild in the next five years if we don't stop the cub petting.

1:48.0

So it's been a opportunity to get the message out that I didn't have before, but it's been a painful process to get there.

1:55.0

And you know, when you said you had all the hate and abuse and everything else, how did you handle that? Have you ever experienced anything like that before and how do you handle it emotionally?

2:05.0

I've only experienced it at the hands of animal abusers. They can't talk about the issues. So the only thing they can do is say hateful things and repeat each other's hateful lies and try to divert the attention away from the animals.

2:17.0

But I've never had the public take the position that these people were correct in anything that they had said. So that was what was totally shocking to me.

2:28.0

And as far as emotional, I mean, I don't take it personally because these people don't know me and they don't know any better, but it was really sad to see that so many people were so easily fooled.

2:40.0

What would you say if you could was the best thing that came out of Tiger King fame and the worst thing that came out of Tiger King?

2:49.0

The best thing is that when I would go to lobby Congress for the Big Cat Public Safety Act, which is a bill that bands cub petting and phases out private ownership.

2:59.0

But most of the people in Washington DC didn't believe that this whole industry even existed. So thankfully, after seeing Tiger King, they do know that there is a handful of people who are speed breeding tigers ripping the cubs away and using them as paid play props.

3:17.0

They didn't know that before and now that they know it, they're stepping up and supporting our bill. We have 252 co sponsors in the house right now. And which is more than we've ever had before.

3:28.0

It's more than a majority. So we know it'll pass in the house. And the Senate is picking up steam every day. I'm actually going back to DC next week to lobby.

3:37.0

I'm the worst thing.

3:38.0

I think the worst thing has been the impact on my family because we had worked for 30 years to build one of the most influential and respected sanctuaries in the world.
