Summary

Carla Naumburg, PhD, LICSW (clinical social worker & bestselling author) helps us break down "sh*tty parent syndrome", the evolution in parenting methods from generation to generation, and practical ways to practice self-care. Mayim and Carla discuss the unusual origin story of their friendship after Carla wrote an article criticizing Mayim’s parenting techniques. They explain the importance of honesty when sharing parenting struggles and not comparing yourself to other parents, how meditation impacts their parenting skills, and the dark side of "mommy blogging." Carla shares why she doesn’t believe there are bad parents, what self-compassion in parenting really means, and her tips for parenting with anxiety and mindfulness-based stress reduction.

You guys talk a lot on this podcast. This is what I think I love about the narratives we create in our minds, right?

0:08.1

And when people around us are experiencing and expressing unpleasant emotions, we tend to create a lot of narratives in our mind about what the why that's happening and what that has to do with us and what it means for our relationship.

0:23.2

And I think that I have no idea what you're talking about, Carla.

0:26.4

No, I mean either. I don't like that's not the world I live in all the time.

0:30.0

But here's the deal. Whether or not our narratives are accurate is not actually that interesting to me.

0:37.0

What I'm interested in is, are they skillful?

0:40.0

And the Buddhist talk about, they don't talk about good and bad, which I love because good and bad is like so judging and just makes you feel like shit and then you finally do something good, but it does last very long and then you feel bad again.

0:52.0

What they talk about is skillful or not skillful and things that are skillful bring us closer to our goal, whatever it is.

0:59.2

What I'm interested in in these internal narratives that we make up these stories we construct is, are they skillful?

1:06.6

Are they bringing us closer to whatever our goal is and maybe our goal is a stronger relationship with our child or maybe our goal is keeping the house clean enough that we don't lose our minds.

1:15.8

I don't, those are two different goals and we can hold them both.

1:18.8

So if your kid is a freaking mess, right? Or if they're just having a difficult moment, what's the narrative we're going to say to ourselves and it could be, oh, I'm a terrible parent because I'm not keeping my child happy all the time.

1:31.8

Or it could be, oh, my kid is having this big transition that's tired because they need more sleep and they're in a grocery and whatever.

1:38.8

Or the narrative could be like, yep, shit happens. We'll get them through this and tomorrow's another day.

1:43.8

And I'm going to opt for option B or C rather than the shitty parent option because I think those are more skillful.

1:49.8

Like they leave me in a better direction of whatever my goal is, which presumably is to have a smoother night and not feel like shit about myself and the purposes.

1:58.8

It's my and B all, it's a breakdown, she's going to break it down for you because you know she knows a thing or two.

2:06.8

So now she's going to break down, it's a breakdown, she's going to break it down.

2:12.8

Hi, oh, my and B all can welcome to my breakdown. This is the place where we break things down so you don't have to I'm holding my heart today because we're going to be talking about holding your heart and having self compassion.

2:22.8

But first I'd like to introduce you to a very compassionate person, Jonathan Cohen.

2:26.8

Hi, my name.

2:27.8

Hi, everyone.
