Summary

Do animals – other than we humans – have thoughts, feelings? Are their emotions similar to ours? Carl Safina is an ecologist who explores our relationship with the living world—and how it could be better. His recent work, and new book, probes how free-living animals experience life - and takes a serious look at their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Carl's love of nature has led him to a lifetime of studying the world we live in — a world from which we’ve become increasingly separated. In this episode, Alan Alda and Carl Safina look at communication across the animal kingdom, as they reflect on the other animals in the world - with a firm understanding that a lot of what we are, we actually share with them. 0:49.6

We share it, and these kinds of ways of attributing thoughts and emotions to animals are probably

0:55.6

exactly what's going on.

1:03.2

we live in, a world from which we've become increasingly separated.

1:08.7

Carl's books bring us back to that world with beautiful writing, and they often reflect

1:13.4

on the other animals in the world with a firm understanding that a lot of what we are,

1:18.7

we actually share with them.

1:22.1

Well this is so great to be talking to you today because you have the answers to the

1:27.4

questions that probably every one of us has been asking since we were a kid and had a pet

1:33.5

turtle or a pet dog or a pet hamster.

1:36.4

Well, I don't know if I have the answers, but I hope I have answers.

1:40.8

Do they think?

1:41.9

Do they feel?

1:42.9

Now, your answer to that is, I think, definitely yes.
