Vladimir Putin has long claimed his invasion of Ukraine is supposed to make Russia safer.

But for the people of Belgorod, the opposite is true.

In recent weeks, the southern Russian region has been hit by cross-border raids, apparently carried out by Russian partisans opposed to President Putin and based in Ukraine.

On Sunday, fighters from the Russian volunteer corps said they captured two Russian soldiers in Belgorod.

They offered to release them in return for a meeting with the region's governor.

But when he failed to turn up, they said the prisoners of war would be handed over to Ukraine.

The head of the Wagner mercenaries, meanwhile, has stepped up his criticism of Russia's military leaders over their failure to defend Belgorod.

He'd earlier threatened to send invagnaf fighters to defend the region without seeking permission from the Russian authorities.
