Summary
The Capitals search for their new head coach is finally over. Peter Laviolette was named the new head man in Washington. Laviolette has 18 years of experience as a head coach most recently with Nashville for five and a half seasons, leading them to a Stanley Cup Final in 2017 before being fired in January. He has also won a Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006 and lead the Flyers to a championship game in 2010.
For this episode of the pod, Nick Ashooh and JJ Regan first get into some thoughts on the hire and if JJ thinks he is the right man for the job. Following that discussion, Alexa Shaw and Nick got the chance to talk to Capitals GM Brian MacLellan about the new hire, his expectations for the team under this new coaching regime and what Coach Laviolette brings to the table that the Caps have been missing these past two seasons.
After saying goodbye to MacLellan, we brought in the man himself, new Caps Head Coach Peter Laviolette to discuss what made him choose Washington, what we can expect going forward from this team, how happy he is to have Ovi on his team and not playing against him, plus you don't want to miss the story behind the bull mask press conference!

| 0:00.0 | Well, the biggest decision that the Capitals had to face has been answered. We know who the new head coach is. Peter LaViolette. A lot of people are certainly happy about it, JJ. I for one, certainly am. I know you are too. Yeah, I really like the hire. I thought he was the best coach available. I thought he was the best fit for the capitals for exactly what they needed. A disciplinarian who can hold them accountable, but who doesn't have the baggage of Mike Babcock, which I think really wouldn't have worked here. You didn't want to bash him too hard because he could have been a possible head coach. But at the end of the day, I really don't think it would have worked. |
| 0:38.4 | I think Peter Labulet is exactly what they need for this point in time with the window of closing. |
| 0:43.2 | So I'd like to hire a lot. |
| 0:44.8 | Lobbulet coming up along with GM Brian McClellum, the Capitals Talk podcast brought to you by MGM National Harbor. |
| 0:51.2 | Starts right now. |
| 0:57.0 | His spectacular history making continues. It's not a different barrage. |
| 1:00.0 | It's Lord Stanley and he is coming to Washington. |
| 1:06.0 | All right, we're going to hear from McClellan and Lobbyolette in a couple of minutes. |
| 1:11.7 | Nick Ashue, JJ Regan, with you here on the Capital Stock podcast, brought you by MGM National Harbor. |
| 1:16.8 | You look, we had this conversation multiple times on this from really the point that Todd Reardon was fired. |
| 1:22.6 | You and I both were, you know, we agreed that this was the right decision for them to make. I think a lot of |
| 1:28.5 | people would have been very upset with Babcock. I guess Galant, you had a people, there certainly |
| 1:34.0 | would have been the same O to that, but this is the best happy medium to me. You have the success |
| 1:39.1 | and the great track record on one side. You have the disciplinarian also there too, but you |
| 1:43.4 | have somebody that JJ doesn't want to make sure everybody knows he's in charge, and I'm going to embarrass you if you don't understand that. Yeah, that's exactly right. And the capital is, this just isn't the locker room for that. They've shown that they're not going to respond well to that. They can respond well to a disciplinarian like we saw with Barry Trots. But the mind |
| 2:02.1 | games, I think, is where you lose them. So I like LaVuette a lot. He's had all the same success as |
| 2:09.3 | Mike Babcock with one ring and two other conference championships, but he's done it with |
| 2:14.8 | worst rosters and more recently than Mike Babcock. So I like to hire a lot. I think he's exactly what they needed. It was kind of funny. He didn't want to come out and say that he was a disciplinarian and he didn't want to come out and say that maybe some of his other, his former players would think he was hard on him. But I think he's a guy who has proven that he can get the most out of |
| 2:36.6 | his players when he comes to a new team and his track record shows that. Yeah, it's exactly what |
| 2:42.1 | they needed. They needed somebody that was going to come in and hopefully turn this team around |
| 2:46.4 | and get them where they want to be right away. He has that track record. And it's funny, I wrote about |
| 2:50.5 | why Mike Babcock would have been a horrible decision for this team. And you have some people, and I know you've run into this too where all they do is read the headline and then they don't actually read what you wrote and why. And you get the snark of like, oh, yeah, of course, this team doesn't need a coach with a winning track record and a disciplinarian when they need disciplined, clearly not reading as to why the pendulum swings far to, you know, the other side with Babcock. But it doesn't matter. |
