I'm John Batchel with Gordon Chang, my colleague and co-host and friend,

and we're headed to the Arctic, to the north of North America, which is Canada.

And we welcome our colleague, Charles Burton of Synopsis,

to help us understand a tangle that is fresh and yet again, it's logical.

Canada moves to protect Arctic from threats by Russia and China, reads the New York Times.

Ottawa says its focus on the Arctic comes after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, quote,

has shaken the foundations of international cooperation in the northern region.

Subsequent to this headline,

China is now threatening Canada. Charles, a very good evening to you. Canada enjoys the bounty of heaven. Your natural resources and your geography put you in a wonderful position to profit not only the Canadian

citizens but the world's for the balance of this century and more. And yet, it now appears that

China and Russia both are contesting your sovereignty in the north. Is this alarming in Ottawa?
