To Canada, the headline, National Post, Trudeau addressing Canadians as trade war with U.S. roars to life.

Canada will not let this unjustified decision go unanswered, said the Prime Minister.

In addition, we learn that the Canadians right now are extremely alarmed by what the

tariff announcement by the White House means for the future.

I welcome Charles Burton of the

synopsis. He's in Ottawa because the future includes a new liberal party leader and a general

election this springtime. So, Charles, a very good evening to you. First of all, the 25% tariff announced by the

White House. That is not a complete surprise. It was announced a month ago that it was coming.

And I understood there were conversations between Ottawa and Washington to mediate. What is it that pushed the decision to no mitigation whatsoever?

Well, you know, initially when Mr. Trump issued the executive order,

it was a threat of tariffs if Canada and Mexico didn't address issues at the

border between Canada and the United States and Mexico and the United States with regard to

illegal migration and fentanyl. And so Canada spent a lot of time and made some commitments and some genuine investment

into trying to respond to U.S. concerns about particularly terrorists coming down from Canada

and entering the United States and a very actually quite modest flow of fentanyl from Canada into the United States.

You know, fentanyl enters the United States through a lot of means. Canada is is one of them.

But, you know, certainly I think any any fentanyl should be stopped. So there was, when the

announcement came through that the tariffs would be happening anyway,

and Mr. Trump was making indications that the best response to the tariffs would be for auto manufacturers to reshor from joint production with Canada into moving into Michigan and doing all the auto manufacturing

in the United States.

I think some Canadians were quite taken aback.
