0:11.0	I'm Keith Simon. Right now we're going through the first book of the Bible, Genesis.
0:16.5	Let me share it with you two things that don't seem to fit together, and yet somehow I find them
0:20.9	both active in my life. The first thing I see in my life is cynicism.
0:25.9	I'm far more cynical than I wish I was. A cynic believes that all people are selfishly
0:31.6	motivated.
0:32.8	So a cynic has hard time believing that anyone is really telling them the truth because they
0:37.3	believe that everybody has an agenda.
0:40.1	To put it mildly, cynicism doesn't offer much hope.
0:43.6	It says that the world is broken, so deal with it.
0:47.4	Some cynics even stop working to improve things in the world because they're not sure that
0:51.2	anything really can be improved.
0:54.4	So for example, cynicism might keep someone from voting because they don't think their vote matters
0:59.2	or because they think that it doesn't really matter which candidate wins an election.
1:04.0	On top of that, cynicism erodes trust.
1:07.5	How do we work together if we don't trust each other?
1:10.9	Synicism is dangerous both to an individual person but also to a whole society.
1:15.0	So I'm cynical, but I don't want to be cynical.
1:18.0	But that leads me to the second thing I find in my life and that is that I'm shocked that more people aren't cynical.
1:24.3	Synicism seems like the natural response to the broken world we live in.
1:28.7	It seems to me that we see the same problems over and over and over, the same sinful patterns over and over and
1:36.4	over and over, and yet everyone always acts surprised.
