Summary

Dr. James White was recently interviewed by a fellow Calvinist, Joel Webbon, and they discussed a debate with Dr. Leighton Flowers addressing the crux of the disagreement between Calvinists and all other Christians: DOES REGENERATION PRECEDE FAITH? Specifically, Joel asked about a question that seems to have stumped him regarding Colossians 2:12: "... you were also raised up with Him through faith..."

I'm Hello, and welcome back to Sociology 101.

0:29.5

Today we're going to ask the question once again, does regeneration precede faith?

0:33.8

In other words, are you given new life?

0:35.6

That's what regeneration is, being born again. Does that

0:38.5

precede you having faith or to those who believe get new life? Well, according to the scripture,

0:46.0

I think it's quite clear. We've seen this quite a few times, but I'll pull it up again for those

0:50.2

that need to see it again. You see from John chapter 5, beginning there in verse 40,

0:55.8

speaking to the Pharisees, you were unwilling to come to me so that you may have life, Jesus says.

1:01.7

He didn't say, I refuse to give you life so that you would certainly come to me. Jesus

1:05.6

Ordo Saludus is that you must come to him in order to have life. We also see this over in John chapter 20, verse 31.

1:13.6

Therefore, many other signs Jesus performed in the presence of his disciples,

1:16.5

which are not written in this book,

1:17.8

but these have been written so that you may believe.

1:20.8

So the gospel has been written.

1:22.5

These truths have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ,

1:26.9

the son of God, and that by believing

1:29.3

you may have life in His name.

1:32.2

So how do you have life in His name according to the Scripture?

1:34.8

You believe on the Lord Jesus Christ so as to be given new life.

1:39.3

But this is the crux of the entire argument that we have with our Calvinist friends.

1:43.5

Even R.C. Spruill lays this out for us pretty clearly. Listen, if you will.

1:48.2

And the whole dispute is over the question of the order of salvation, which comes first,
