Hey folks, John Carlin here. I recently served as the number two of the Justice Department,

0:06.3

and before I took on that position, I hosted Cafe CyberSpace Podcast. This week, I'm

0:11.6

excited to fill in for Priten Joyce on the Cafe Insider Podcast. Joining me is Chris

0:16.9

Inglis. Chris recently served as the first US National Cyber Director, a position he

0:21.9

helped envision and create. In that role, he advised the President on Cybersecurity Issues

0:27.3

and helped the administration develop its first National Cybersecurity Strategy. Before

0:32.2

that, Chris served in many positions throughout government, including as Deputy Director of

0:36.5

the National Security Agency under two Presidents. Chris and I discussed the National Security

0:41.6

implications of artificial intelligence, the lessons learned from recent cyber attacks,

0:46.8

and the responsibilities of the National Cyber Director. Today, we're pleased to share

0:51.0

an excerpt from that episode with listeners of Stay Tuned. But to hear our full conversation

You can do that at cafe.com slash insider. That's cafe.com slash insider. We look forward

1:08.8

to having you as part of the insider community. We're on the cusp of trying to regulate a

1:18.3

new breakout technology that actually I think you will do in the cyber security, but that's

1:22.8

artificial intelligence. Maybe just take a step back. The White House recently announced

1:29.4

it's doing a listening session and wants to put out principles on artificial intelligence.

1:34.6

That's very recent. Taking a step back, let me just start with, what do you think the risks

1:40.2

and benefits of artificial intelligence are in National Security? Does it implicate

1:44.0

national security? That's a great question. I would observe two things before I answer

1:48.4

that question. One, it's moving so fast that I'm not sure we yet know what the risks and

1:54.2

benefits are or that we will ever be kind of line abreast with it as it races forward.
