I've had patients who were literally being wheeled in for emergency appendectomies who en route to the OR.

Someone, you know, a billing person would come up to their bedside and say,

oh, can you give us a credit card? Literally this happened to my patient and the patient said,

yeah, I'm in a gown. I don't have any clothes. I don't have my wallet.

And the billing person said, oh, I have a cell phone. Can you call someone who can give us a credit card?

That's a real life story that one of my guests for this episode, Elizabeth Rosenthal, told me,

you'll hear more from her in a bit. And I think it sets up the world we're living in right now.

Okay, I know that this isn't news. Medical expenses are now the largest single cause of bankruptcy nationwide.

The Affordable Care Act just keeps getting chipped away, though it wasn't perfect to begin with.
