Summary

When you react to your husband’s abuse, it can feel like you’re the abuser. When he tells you how hard his childhood was, you may feel sorry for him. When you read about personality disorders, some of the symptoms fit you. When you read about mental illness, the symptoms also fit him. Which makes you wonder… If your husband was abused, is it really fair to hold his harmful behavior against him? If he has unresolved trauma or a personality disorder, is it wrong to expect him to treat you better? And even more confusing… What if your C-PTSD sometimes mimics a personality disorder? What if your traumatic responses seem abusive? In this episode, I peel back the layers on: • The ingredients of C-PTSD • Who you can save before you become leftovers (it’s only ever one person) • The different flavors of C-PTSD and BPD • Why the reason behind your husband’s behavior matters less than a hill of beans (and what does) • A three-step recipe to recover from abuse in your own life Listen or download the transcript at flyingfreenow.com/139 FREE: I'll send you the first chapter of my book, Is It Me? Today we have another listener question. So I like to just dive right in so let's

0:26.3

hear what her question is.

0:27.8

Hi, my question is, can someone, a Christian in this situation, with unheeled trauma, personally

0:39.7

that they've experienced or something like complex PTSD, can that appear to mimic a personality disorder like narcissism,

0:55.0

you know, or something related.

0:57.3

And if so, does that trauma create extenuating circumstances that would need to be addressed differently

1:08.9

than when dealing with like say a garden variety narcissist.

1:14.1

Okay I think there are two ways to answer this question depending on what's being asked.

1:19.6

I think this person was asking that if someone, if someone who has abusive tendencies could be

1:24.8

abusive because of having PTSD or CPTSD but then she also wanted to know if PTSD or CPSD can mimic personality disorders.

1:37.0

And the answer to both of those questions is yes, that that's a short answer.

1:42.0

End of the podcast.

1:43.0

1:44.0

1:49.0

are, just in case there are any listeners who aren't sure what that is.

1:53.0

And then we can differentiate those from personality disorders.

1:58.6

So PTSD stands for post-traumatic stress disorder, and it can occur when a person witnesses or
