Summary

Do you ever feel like your life is busy? What causes it to be that way? As we start a new series, The Seven Sins of Suburbia, JP addresses the sin of busyness by examining Mary and Martha in Luke 10.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

-Busyness is the enemy of encouragement.

-What all could you put in the blank: Busyness is the enemy of ________.

-Here’s a secret: you will always have a lot to do. There will always be more to do than you have time for.

-How much do you like yourself and your life when you are busy?

-Jesus had friends. Have you ever considered that?

-Minister or ministry simply means to render aid to those in need. All Christian’s, regardless of where they work and get a paycheck, are called to ministry.

-Busyness is the enemy of focus.

-What is the work that only you can do? What are the things that only you can do?

-Don’t let the many things distract you from the one thing.

-You are the only one who is in charge of your relationship with Jesus.

-Busyness breeds a victim mentality. You are either for me or against me when I’m busy.

-Busyness is the enemy of empathy.

-People become distractions to your list of things to do when you are busy.

-Nobody cares how busy you are. No one.

-This is not an admonition to single moms. If you are a single mom, we are here for you! Let us know how we can help and serve you.

-The world will not crumble if you slow down and stop.

-Busyness is the enemy of peace and joy.

-The greatest antidote to “What if…” is to answer the question.

-If busy frustrates you, you have set yourself up for a life of frustration.

-When something comes at you that you didn’t expect, margin is a great thing. But more than margin, prioritization will help you more.

-There are things that won’t get done. Choose them carefully.

-“I have so much to do today that I will spend three hours in prayer in order to get it all done.” -Martin Luther

-If you want to see your kids go to an Ivy League school or play professional sports, but you don’t disciple them or teach them the Bible, that is a really, really bad trade.

-What you say no to will tell other people what is most important to you. People will remember what you say no to.

-Three of the big rocks we want you to prioritize at Harris Creek are attending corporate worship, serving, and meeting consistently with your Life Group.

-What are your personal big rocks? Your non-negotiables in life?

You guys for leading us this morning. Good morning. Happy New Year. I haven't seen you guys.

0:18.3

We haven't met. My name is J.P. or Jonathan Picekluda, and I have the privilege of serving on staff here.

0:23.9

And this time of year, the new year, it's a really great time of reset, reflection. I'm sure you have some sort of practices in your home or in your personal life that you use this season to think, okay, what are things I want to do in

0:38.8

2022? What are things I want to change in 2022? How am I not going to get COVID in

0:44.5

2022? And all the things that you're thinking about. And I am no exception to that. And so we,

0:51.8

as a staff, take off between Christmas and New Year's and we have

0:56.0

that time to be with family. The offices are closed and that's a great mental reset. And so

1:01.5

Monday we're back at it, you know, back in the rotation, if you will. Monday, every Monday for

1:07.7

me starts with a management meeting where the people that report directly to me

1:11.6

we gather up and kind of plan the week and debrief Sunday and all the things and so I'm going to

1:17.3

that management meeting I get there early and I'm thinking about one of the things that I want to do

1:21.6

better this year is just be a great encourager I know that good leaders are greatagers, and I want to just think about how I can

1:29.6

encourage those around me. And so I'm reflecting on that, and I began to go through each person

1:34.5

that I'm about to sit with in my head and just think about the words of encouragement that I want

1:39.3

to speak over them. And so as I'm doing that practice and kind of mentally preparing to just shower them

1:46.9

with encouragement, I begin to think about all the things that we need to do. Because this time of

1:53.8

years is really hectic. Because we have, let's see, staff retreat, we have that leadership team retreat, management team

2:05.4

retreat, we have elders retreat, and then sermon planning retreat where we really plan out

2:10.4

the entire year. And don't let the word retreat fool you because nobody's retreating. It's all

2:16.3

just figuring out the year.
