0:32.8	So Ed Thorpe, I'm reading his biography
0:34.8	called Man for All Markets.
0:36.8	So Ed Thorpe, today he's 91, so what does that mean?
0:39.8	He's born in the 1940s, 1930s. Ed Thorpe, he grew up as a math whiz kid. He was like a prodigy at a young age.
0:47.6	Grew up in a very poor household, didn't have a lot of money, but as a young kid when he was like 12 and 13 years old, he got moved up a bunch of
0:54.8	grades and he took a bunch of standardized tests and at the time when he lived in California,
0:59.6	he got something like the highest scores in California for high schoolers when he was like 13 years old and at the time they didn't have
1:06.0	calculators but they had like little counting devices and he would take these tests without
1:09.4	these counting devices because he couldn't afford them and he still crushed it. He killed it.
1:14.7	So eventually Ed Thorpe he gets a scholarship to Berkeley and then he goes to
1:18.4	UCLA where he gets his PhD in mathematics and he becomes a professor and he starts going down this track where he's in his 30s and he's this brilliant professor and whatever.
1:29.0	But then he does something interesting. He gets interested in applying his theories to real life
