Now, is it hooray for Hollywood or dismay for Hollywood? President Donald Trump has proposed

introducing 100% tariffs on all films made outside the United States. He says, quote,

the movie industry in America is dying a very fast death. But international analysts say this could be devastating, not just for the

global film industry, but also for cinema in America itself. To pick through what this is

and what it might mean, I'm delighted to say I'm joined here in the bunker by Daniel Bessner.

Daniel is the Anne H.H and Kenneth B. Pyle Associate Professor in American Foreign Policy

in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington.

And among other things, he specializes in the history and practice of the entertainment industry.

Short answer, yes. Longer answer, also yes. I think that for a variety of reasons, just broadly speaking, film and movies just aren't at the center of the

culture that they were for roughly a century from, let's say, 19, 19, 1920 to 2019,

2020. We no longer really live in a mass culture in the way that we did in the 20th century.
