Carmeler is now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee and unless anything bizarre

happens this will be made official at the DNC next month. Now focus is

going to turn to who she will pick to run alongside her to go up against Donald

Trump and JD Vance. I'm Jacob Jarvis and joining me to discuss

who she might pick and why she might pick them is Katie Gaddini, a visiting scholar at

Stanford University and an associate professor of sociology at the Social Research Institute University College London.

Hello Katie, thanks for joining us for the bunker.

Hi, thanks for having me.

Katie, on a basic level, what does it seem like Harris needs from a VP and what are her weaknesses what could they they cover for her?

So there's a few things that Harris will be looking for. Number one is a man and we can talk a little bit more about that later, but

she'll definitely want to balance it in terms of gender, the ticket. Number two is someone who's a moderate. So Pamela Harris is from California.

Some of her views will be cast as extremist by moderates and certainly by

conservatives. So she'll be looking for a running mate who's seen very much as a moderate

Democrat, someone who can reach across the aisle. And then I think the third thing is she'll be looking

for someone that can really build this momentum of her being younger, of her being new, of her being something

different, and not want someone that takes away from that sort of energy that she's got going.

On the having to pick a man, is part of that due to, I know how kind of hyper-masculine

Donald Trump and J.D. Vance are pitching themselves or is it actually just a kind of maybe an unfortunate reflection but a reflection of how American society will feel towards the candidates?

It's both, unfortunately.

So, you know, the U.S. is a very traditional in terms of gender roles,

much more so than the UK.

And so that's definitely going to play into it and I think two women on the ticket would frankly not be a winning strategy.
