Summary
Bullet Points • Book Club
It’s time for another #bookclub episode of the podcast, not least because you’ve been sharing with me, via DM and email, the books you’ve been enjoying lately. I’ve also had my nose, and ears, in some great reads and I’m sharing my five favourites with you.
I selected books I’ve found informative, inspiring, entertaining and downright eye-opening and I’d love to hear your thoughts.
In this #bookclub episode:
How to Move It by Joslyn Thompson-Rule
Act Accordingly by Colin Wright
The Art of Fairness by David Bodanis
Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art

| 0:00.0 | Hello, hi and welcome to another bullet points episode of the Emma Gunn Show. It's so good to spend this time with you. Thank you for joining me. I am your host, Emma Gunnarwardner, and I thought we could do another book club today. And by book club, I just mean I thought I would share with you some books that I've read recently and that I thought might be quite interesting to tell you about. I thought you may enjoy them too. |
| 0:25.7 | Now, as you very well know, if you're a long time listener, if you are a regular most excellent listener, you will know that I read a lot of books as research for the podcast, which means I have this real split, especially at the moment. |
| 0:36.8 | I've been really struggling with it a bit, actually, of reading for work but also reading for recreation because I enjoy it on both counts. And it is actually a balance I've struggled with a lot recently because I've been reading for work so much in the day that I've then struggled to read in the evening, although, in fairness, this has allowed me to |
| 0:56.0 | watch all seven seasons of Buffy in around a month, so every cloud. |
| 0:59.7 | However, the reason why I'm reinstating these book clubs and these book club episodes, |
| 1:05.3 | A, to start discussion in the Facebook forum because it always generates a lot of chat, |
| 1:10.6 | which is really nice, is that I never get to the end of a book and think, oh, I wish I hadn't bothered. It's always a positive experience, even if I didn't much like the book. So in this episode, I'm going to share with you five books that I've read recently. Actually, I'm not sure it's five, but I'm going to share with you the books that I've read recently that I found either informative, entertaining, or in the case of the first book, actually really helpful. So the first book is |
| 1:31.4 | How to Move It by Jocelyn Thompson Rule. Jocelyn is a personal trainer and sports therapist, |
| 1:37.3 | and she has nearly 20 years experience, and she's also a Nike master trainer and now author. The book is |
| 1:42.8 | all about unlocking your potential. And for me, |
| 1:46.4 | it was the kind of steady expert guidance that I've never actually received about fitness and |
| 1:52.0 | movement and exercise. And I really wish that someone had told me this years ago. Maybe it's the |
| 1:56.4 | sort of the kind of information that people think you just kind of know instinctively. I don't know. |
| 2:01.4 | But I found it actually really comforting. It was as if Jocelyn was taking me by the hand and just |
| 2:06.7 | talking to me about how to move, why I should move, the benefits of moving all of those things. |
| 2:13.3 | And yes, you could look at it as a fitness book, but the emphasis on the mind-body connection, |
| 2:19.9 | how to use your breath and how to really tap into what you're trying to achieve, I found |
| 2:24.3 | incredibly helpful. Why should you read it? Well, if you're interested in fitness and what to |
| 2:28.9 | understand from someone who's an expert in this area, how to move, how to maximize, how you |
| 2:33.4 | move, and how to balance exercise and rest. And actually what's an expert in this area, how to move, how to maximise, how you move, and how to |
| 2:34.7 | balance exercise and rest. And actually what's so pleasing about this book is the emphasis on |
| 2:39.6 | rest, which I think is missing from a lot of fitness chat. Then this is a must read. Plus, |
