Summary
It’s time for another #bookclub episode of the podcast, not least because you’ve been sharing with me, via DM and email, the books you’ve been enjoying lately. I’ve also had my nose, and ears, in some great reads and I’m sharing my five favourites with you.
I selected books I’ve found informative, inspiring, entertaining and downright eye-opening and I’d love to hear your thoughts.
In today’s #bookclub episode:
Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss (@thefbinegotiator) and Tahl Raz. Keep hitting the same dead-ends in your lines of communication? This book could help and Chris’ insights in his time as a hostage negotiator are incredibly helpful.
TMI: My Life in Scandal by Perez Hilton (@theperezhilton). Perez came on the podcast at the end of last year and it was in preparing for that conversation that I read this book. It’s a fascinating insight into what was going on as Perez, and his hugely popular website, charted a unique period in celebrity history.
Open Book: A Memoir by Jessica Simpson (@jessicasimpson). I used to love a TV show on MTV called Diary. The tagline was ‘you think you know, but you have no idea’. This is my way of saying that I thought I had the measure of Jessica Simpson, but it turns out I didn’t have a clue. I listened to this on @audible and it’s a triumph, not least because of the way in which Jessica tells her story.
Untamed: Stop Pleasing, Start Living by Glennon Doyle (@glennondoyle) Yep, @adele influenced me into buying this. One social media post and within seconds it’s on my @amazonkindle. Adele said ‘this books will shake your brain and make your soul scream’, but what do you think?
How to Heal a Broken Heart by Rosie Green (@lifesrosie). Rosie charts her journey through heartbreak and the disintegration of everything she thought was certain and it’s raw, honest and not at all sugar-coated. In this book Rosie re-enters that pain in order to offer anyone else experiencing it a path out of it. Her honesty, candour and resilience shine through and it’s a must-read guide for anyone struggling with heartache, loss or rejection.

| 0:00.0 | Hello, hi and welcome to another bullet points episode of the Emma Gunn Show. |
| 0:10.5 | I am your host, Emiggen Awardner, and I thought we could revisit Book Club today. |
| 0:15.8 | And by Book Club, I just mean that I thought I'd share with you some books I've read recently |
| 0:20.4 | that have been really interesting and that I thought I'd share with you some books I've read recently that have been |
| 0:20.9 | really interesting and that I think you might enjoy too. |
| 0:24.8 | So it's been a while since we've done one of these episodes together and I know that they are |
| 0:28.9 | very popular in the Facebook group and that's where I really love to hear what books you're |
| 0:33.2 | reading or listening to at the moment. |
| 0:35.0 | So if you aren't already, go to the show notes, which can be found wherever you stream or download your podcasts and click the link to join the Facebook group. There are thousands of us in there and we're talking about all sorts of things. But let's start talking about books. I know at one point we were talking about starting an actual book club for the podcast. We just haven't got around to it yet, maybe, maybe a little while. |
| 0:58.3 | But if you would like to share what you're reading, that's the place to do it and have a chat with other listeners of the podcast. So before I get into the books I've been reading, I actually |
| 1:02.7 | wanted to mention the books I'm not reading. And that's because it's been a really slow shift, |
| 1:08.3 | but I have noticed that I am reading exclusively nonfiction. |
| 1:13.4 | Is anyone else doing this? I don't know whether it's a lockdown thing. I don't know what it is, |
| 1:17.4 | but I haven't picked up a fiction novel in such a long time and I realized I leave stories and |
| 1:22.5 | fantasy to film and television and I'm really interested to know if I'm alone in that or whether |
| 1:26.8 | it's something that |
| 1:27.9 | quite a few people are doing. I don't know. The obvious caveat here is that as soon as Lindsay |
| 1:33.0 | Kelk's new book on a night like this comes out, I will be devouring that in one sitting. |
| 1:37.8 | And listener, trust me, every now and again I'll WhatsApp her and try to get her to send |
| 1:42.5 | me the word document with the book on because it's not out until November 2021. |
| 1:43.5 | So I've got quite a while to wait for it, but she hasn't emailed it to me yet. But you never know, you never know, maybe a preview copy towards the end of the summer. I am keeping my fingers crossed. The only thing I would say is I do have a little life on my bookshelf, |
| 2:01.6 | but I have been told by so many people that it will make me cry and destroy my, um, destroy my soul. So I'm nervous to start it. And I actually only bought it because Anthony from Queer, I was wearing a shirt with the character's names on in an episode of the show. And as I was watching, I was sitting there and I thought, what was that? Put the names in and it came up and I thought, well, if Anthony likes him, then I guess I better read the book, but I still haven't got around to reading the book. But anyway, and the other thing I wanted to say before I get into my list, because I've picked my five books at the moment, is that I've really struggled with, and it's something that we covered during 26 habits actually when we |
