It's February 1953 at the Nuremberg Toy Fair, an annual trade conference for the toy industry in

Germany. 32-year-old Gottfried Kurt Christensen sits for lonely at the small Lego exhibition stand.

He's had hardly any interest today, most attendees scurry past with barely a look in Gottfried's direction.

Finally though, he manages to make eye contact with a smartly dressed man who comes over to the booth.

Gottfried rises from his seat and the men shake hands.

The other man introduces himself as a toy buyer from a German department store. Gottfried smiles.

This is his chance to land a big sale.

Well, welcome to Lego. We're a toy manufacturer based out of Billent and Denmark.

Well, pleased to meet you. What exactly does Lego do?

We're one of Denmark's top toy makers, but we're a family firm. My father set up the business in the 1930s and still runs it today.

I'm the junior managing director and my two brothers help run production of these quality toys.

Gottfried turns to the shelves behind him, which are stuffed with Lego products from pull-along wooden ducks to plastic cars.

We have over 250 different toys now, all renowned in Denmark for their quality.

Gottfried reaches up and takes a toy tractor from the shelf.

This is our latest product, the Ferguson Model Tractor.

It's made out of plastic with rubber tires, and if you turn the steering, it moves the front wheels.

You see? Yeah, let's clever. So you make a farm toys.

Oh, not just farm toys. No, in Denmark, where we're best known for this, the piece pistol.

Gottfried shows the man another one of their toys, a replica wooden pistol.

It's a gun that shoots bullets and makes a sound when it fires. Listen, I designed it myself.
