Hello, everyone. Welcome back to the Epic Gardening podcast. Kevin Asperger here. I'm joined

0:18.4

by Matt Reese Warren who is a gardener. He's the author of The Ecological Gardener, which

0:23.6

is a book that is out right now. So go ahead and grab a copy. Matt, yesterday we went deep

0:28.6

on biochar as an amendment and as a sort of just a way to consider how to better use resources

0:34.3

in the garden. Today, we're talking about building a sack garden. You know, I'm a big fan of

0:40.3

repurposed found materials and also just growing in bags of really any kind. And so, you know,

0:46.3

I'm curious what type of sack gardening are you practicing? Yeah. One of the first time I saw

0:55.0

it was actually in Africa. I was sort of researching sort of key hog gardens and I came across

1:04.0

sack gardens and I visited some places down there. And I think, yeah, what struck me was the

1:10.9

practicality of it. So it's if you can imagine a Hessian coffee sack, like whether there's

1:18.5

big ones that sort of your big coffee suppliers, maybe a local coffee shop will bring their coffee beans

1:25.7

in. You know, the big, big old sacks with some lovely print on them. You know, about that size is

1:32.9

what I'm thinking. You know, you fill it up with soil and then you're you're planting, you know,

1:40.0

anything you want in it. It could be micro greens. It could be micro veg. It could be herbs.

1:45.8

You know, it's really adaptable to especially people with a really small amount of space,

1:51.9

you know, so you're basically vertical gardening, you know, you're trying to use as much,

1:59.3

you're trying to get as much out of a small amount of space because you could not only plant in

2:05.2

the top, but because it's Hessian and it's not a solid unit made of metal or steel or terracotta or

2:13.4

plastic, then you can cut into the sides and plant up the sides as well as the top. So you get this

2:20.3

huge surface area for a very small amount of space of you, but only, you know, you love your

2:26.3

gardening and all you've got is a balcony or, you know, a tiny little patio or even just a really

2:35.2

small sort of, you know, veg garden space that you want to get more veg into. It's fantastic for
