Summary

In the last episode of the year, I was the Naked Beauty interviewee. Our incredibly talented producer, Mbiye Kasonga, and I sat down to reflect on the previous two years we’ve spent working together. She asked me about my interest in storytelling and my experiences after a full year of working for myself and taking creative risks. It gave me a chance to talk about my early interests in audio storytelling and the inspiration I drew listening to Wendy Williams after school every day. We also talked about our professional partnership and how committing to decisiveness and rejecting perfectionism helps us get our work into the world. Of course, none of this hard work would be possible without great support, and we dove deep into how respect and support in our romantic lives make it easier to chase our dreams. Thank you so much for an incredible year of Naked Beauty, I’m excited to welcome my baby into the world and take a break, but I’m even more excited about the great beauty stories we’ll get to tell in 2025.

Tune in as we discuss:

  • How to build and lead a strong team
  • Why consistency and transparency are the most vital tools for early podcasters
  • How the podcast industry has changed over the past eight years
  • Our predictions for the future of beauty

And this episode is really different because you are interviewing me.

0:24.9

So I'm in the interviewee seat right now, which is different for me.

0:29.7

I'm going to do my best.

0:30.8

I have no idea what she's going to ask me.

0:33.2

I have no idea what these questions are.

0:35.5

Normally we'll talk beforehand for episodes. Oh, what are the questions? What are the topics? So this should be very interesting. But I thought this would be a really fun way. When you pitched it to me, like the great producer you are, I was like, this will be a fun way to wrap up the hot seat. It's not really a hot seat. It's a great place to be. Okay. I was going to say, I hope this is like a warm. I don't know how I feel anything in the hot seat. I'm like,

let me get comfortable.

Yo, remember back on the bully when cats used to harmonize like. Hello, hello. This is not

Brooke DeVar. This is B.A. Kassanga. I am the producer for Naked Beauty and I produce a couple other podcasts as well. I've been

1:13.2

making podcasts for a decade now, I believe. What is it? 2024. Yeah, I've been making podcasts

1:20.4

since 2014. I learned in a digital journalism class that I took in college. I went to the

College of William and Mary,

1:32.1

had a great digital journalism professor who taught us how to put together a podcast from beginning to end. That was our final project. And I haven't stopped since. So on Naked Beauty,

1:38.4

like you mentioned, we work together to ideate on the episodes, work on edits afterward,

talk to a lot of people. I think that's

1:46.3

the biggest thing. People are always asking me what the day to day of a producer looks like.

1:52.0

And I think if you're a producer who produces, you're just talking to people all day long and
