Summary

#80. Brenda and Thane Paulsen spoke with Andy from their Bavaria 39 'Asylum' at Rodney Bay Marina in Saint Lucia. They'd just completed their first Atlantic crossing, sailing in the ARC+ rally, which departs Las Palmas and stops in the Cape Verde islands en route to the Caribbean.

Brenda and Thane sailed double-handed, and spoke about the challenges of short-handed sailing. They delved into their sailing history, gave some practical tips on shipping their boat to Europe and cruising the Med, and talked about what it's like to sail in a rally.

seminar that we do in Annapolis with World Cruising Club, and he had a lot of questions about doing

the arc, how to refit the boat, what to do, this and that, had the continued correspondence with

him, and it was really nice to see them here in St. Lucia, having completed their big adventure.

So this was a really good episode.

This is full of practical tips for any of you American sailors that are interested in going to

the Mediterranean. They talk a lot about the logistics, what it was like doing a refit in a foreign

country. I think they did it in Italy. Also, what the Schengen visas are like, and how they

1:09.4

came and went, and what they did with a boat and

1:11.5

how they did this whole process. Lots of practical information and of course, as I like to do, we talked

1:17.3

a lot about philosophical stuff as well and dreaming and doing and that kind of stuff. So really good

mix of philosophy and practical advice in this one. I actually wrote a small feature for the ARC website that was

put up yesterday that included their general story. So check that out. And I think we're going to do
