In our last episode, we discussed Robert Benton's

Best Picture-winning 1979 film Kramer v. Kramer, a wrenching drama that freezes in time and

airs concern about the state of the American marriage. We released 40 years later, marriage story

doesn't carry quite the same burden. As the movie itself depicts, divorce hasn't gotten easier,

but it has grown less novel.

Over the course of Bombach's film, both Nicole, an actress played by Scarlett Johansson,

and her husband Charlie, a playwright and theater director played by Adam Driver,

learn about the culture, rituals, and mechanisms that have grown up around the industry of

divorce. She wants to live in California. He sees them as a New York

family. To find a compromise between these seemingly incompatible goals, they surround themselves
