Summary

Do you find yourself giving alcohol various 'jobs' depending on what you're facing?  While Joy counseled young people about the dangers of alcohol, she secretly beat herself up for drinking more than she wanted to. Feeling torn, she quit her job as a counselor. She had always given alcohol different jobs in her life. First, it helped her fit in with her peers. Then, she used it to manage her grief and, later, to relax after a long day. Throughout her journey, drinking felt like the thing to do because everyone around her was doing it. But when she discovered This Naked Mind, she started picking apart her deeply held beliefs about alcohol. In this episode, Joy shares her incredible journey to living a more wholesome life for herself and eventually finding her way back to the career she loves as a coach. In this episode, Annie and Joy will discuss: - Drinking to mask insecurities and fit in - Blacking out after drinking at 14 - The influence of alcohol in her family history - The health consequences of heavy drinking  - Partying heavily even as an academic student - How alcohol shaped her friendships and relationships - Drinking to mask pain and manage grief - Traveling to find herself  - Counseling others while battling her own drinking - Giving kids the tools to understand alcohol - And other topics… Related Episodes: EP 262: Reader Question – How do I deal with death and grief without alcohol: https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-262-reader-question-grief-without-alcohol/  EP 439: Naked Life Story – Nat X: https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-439-naked-life-story-nat-x  EP 547: Naked Life Story – Claire: https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-547-naked-life-story-claire/   Resources Mentioned: Joy’s Website: https://www.afreelifecoaching.com  Joy’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/afreelife_/  Joy’s Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AFreeLifeCoach/  Ready to take the next step on your journey?  Visit https://learn.thisnakedmind.com/podcast-resources for free resources, programs, and more. Hi, this is Annie Grace and welcome to This Naked Mind podcast. And I'm here with Joy today. Hi, Joy. How are you?

0:21.7

Hi, Annie. I'm really good. It's great to be here with you. Thanks for having me on.

0:27.4

Oh, I'm so glad. So why don't you take us back to the beginning in your journey with alcohol? Where did it all start for you?

0:34.4

Well, you know, what I like to tell people who ask me is that what started out as fun

0:39.9

in high school and college became, it morphed into this way that I own, the only way that I knew how to

0:46.2

relax. And that ultimately became my intolerable norm for years. I'm a Gen X woman and I started drinking in high school. So I had

0:58.5

nearly a 40-year drinking career. Started in the early 80s, the Prince Madonna, big hair, 80s. And in our

1:08.7

case, the 80s was also about the time when the Pac-Man and Space Invaders

1:15.5

arcade games were first coming into the bars with the pool table. Also a time when you could

1:21.8

order a case of OB splits with your buddies and have a whole case of beer on the bar

1:27.1

when you were out with your

1:28.5

friends. And, you know, I look back on it now. I was 14 when I started drinking. I look at my

1:35.7

kids now who are in their teens and young adults, early 20s. And it was a very different

1:43.7

landscape for me when I was a teenager. And I drank to

1:49.6

mask my insecurities. And I drank to fit in. And I think that's the case for a lot of people.

1:58.0

But the goal, we drank to get drunk. The goal was to go out and party. And my very

2:07.6

first experience drinking, it's crazy to me. I was 14 and I hadn't ever really had a beer. I

2:15.7

hadn't gone out drinking. And I grew up in Buffalo, New York, and we lived on the border.

2:20.3

And so we used to go across the border to Canada and go to Friends Beach Houses.

2:24.5

And I told my girlfriend, I really didn't try drinking.

2:28.1

I want to hear what this is all about.
