Summary

While Joy counseled young people about the dangers of alcohol, she secretly beat herself up for drinking more than she wanted to. Feeling torn, she quit her job as a counselor. 0:27.4	Oh, I'm so glad. So why don't you take us back to the beginning in your journey with alcohol? Where did it all start for you?
0:34.4	Well, you know, what I like to tell people who ask me is that what started out as fun
0:39.9	in high school and college became, it morphed into this way that I own, the only way that I knew how to
0:46.2	relax. And that ultimately became my intolerable norm for years. I'm a Gen X woman and I started drinking in high school. So I had
0:58.5	nearly a 40-year drinking career. Started in the early 80s, the Prince Madonna, big hair, 80s. And in our
1:08.7	case, the 80s was also about the time when the Pac-Man and Space Invaders
1:15.5	arcade games were first coming into the bars with the pool table. Also a time when you could
1:21.8	order a case of OB splits with your buddies and have a whole case of beer on the bar
1:27.1	when you were out with your
1:28.5	friends. And, you know, I look back on it now. I was 14 when I started drinking. I look at my
1:35.7	kids now who are in their teens and young adults, early 20s. And it was a very different
1:43.7	landscape for me when I was a teenager. And I drank to
1:49.6	mask my insecurities. And I drank to fit in. And I think that's the case for a lot of people.
1:58.0	But the goal, we drank to get drunk. The goal was to go out and party. And my very
2:07.6	first experience drinking, it's crazy to me. I was 14 and I hadn't ever really had a beer. I
2:15.7	hadn't gone out drinking. And I grew up in Buffalo, New York, and we lived on the border.
2:20.3	And so we used to go across the border to Canada and go to Friends Beach Houses.
2:24.5	And I told my girlfriend, I really didn't try drinking.
