Robert Curito is an abstract painter from California.

He studied painting at Stanford and now teaches at San Jose State.

In this episode, Robert tells the story of a high school trip to the LA County Museum of

Art, where he saw the paintings of Pierre Bernard and how that experience really changed his life.

We also talk about the influences of the artist who have shaped his work since then and why they

mattered to the development of his art. Then Robert

follows that with a realization he had when he took a year off of college that we all

need to be influenced by other artists but we also need the private space and

conviction to paint on our own terms. Another point Robert brings up is the

artist's relationship with galleries. We talk about the great relationship he had with gallery owner Alan Stone and his decision to ultimately continue his art without

gallery representation.

He talks about making that decision and how it has benefited his art.
