Summary

Psychiatrist and author Dr. Jennifer Reid joins Kelly to unpack why so many women walk through life feeling like they’re constantly falling short — even when they’re doing everything “right.”

From perfectionism and people pleasing to over-functioning and feeling responsible for everyone else’s emotions, this conversation dives into the quiet ways guilt shapes our decisions, relationships, careers, and sense of self. Jennifer explains why guilt has become such a common emotional baseline for women, how unrealistic expectations keep us trapped in cycles of burnout and self-criticism, and what it actually looks like to start making decisions from self-trust instead of obligation.

Kelly and Jennifer also discuss the discomfort of disappointing people, the pressure to “have it all,” hyper-accountability, and why so many women struggle to identify what they actually want outside of what’s expected of them.

Hi, Jennifer.

I was telling you before the podcast, I feel like this conversation is one that I have with my

friends on a regular basis where no matter how hard we're trying in life or how many things we're

1:06.3

juggling, there is just something that you always feel like you're dropping the ball on. And that can really be

1:12.0

this heavy weight that we're constantly carrying around. So I know that you work with a lot of

1:17.5

high functioning, self-aware women. Why do you think so many of us feel like we're failing?

1:24.4

Yeah, you know, the more that I talk about this subject, frankly, the angrier I get that we have

1:31.2

to deal with this as women, because I really think of it now as sort of a guilt. It's a tax on our joy.

1:37.5

It's a tax on our pleasure. This idea that if I do something really well at work, I'm taxed with

guilt because maybe I didn't take

care of something at home or I skipped a workout or I wasn't dressed the right way or all these

different ways that we sort of are taxed with this guilt. And so I sort of set out to figure that out

because it was coming up in all of my conversations with friends. And with my sister, who's like one of my
