Summary

Leaders in a digital age face a unique pressure to always be in front.
Our social media platforms entice us to be seen, to be recognized, and to be liked.

Underneath this is a lie that to be hidden is to be forgotten, and to be unknown is to be unloved. This is why one of the greatest temptations leaders face is self-promotion.

Even Jesus faced this very temptation in the wilderness, yet rightly perceived it as a deadly trap from the evil one. Like Jesus, we must resist the many ways we are tempted to elevate our name and ministries into prominence.

  • Is all self-promotion really sinful?
  • Aren't we called to reach people?
  • How do we live and lead publicly without being robbed of joy and contentment?

I address these questions and more on today's podcast episode.

cent with my success is dependent on the extent of my influence,

0:41.5

how many people know me, how many followers I've got and how many invitations I get to speak

0:46.7

outside. And so it's the size of my influence, not just the size of my ministry. And then I'm looking,

0:53.0

and then really actually the amount of praise and affirmation I receive

0:56.0

and how that compares with other people.

0:57.6

And so it can be crushing this struggle of how do I not promote myself, but yet it seems

1:06.2

like everything is so dependent on it.

1:08.2

And so it's crushing because it just squeezes the life right out of us,

1:12.1

the spiritual life out of us. And it distracts us and clouds our vision from God's unique plan for us.

1:17.2

And it just kills joy, kills contentment as we're looking over our shoulders and comparing

1:22.1

ourselves. And our doing ends up getting out of whack. We end up saying yes to things that we really, God's not inviting us to say yes to.

1:30.0

And we violate limits.

1:31.4

We find ourselves in territory of doing things that it can feel like we're spiraling out of control.

1:36.4

And our inner life ends up suffering.
