Summary

It's time for another trip around the solar system on the BIGGER and BETTER Science Weekly!

In this episode of the Fun Kids Science Weekly, we continue our bigger and better podcast where we answer YOUR questions, have scientists battle it out for which science is the best & learn about the power of the brain!

Dan kicks off with the latest in science news, beginning with an ancient Roman scroll which has been digitally unwrapped by scientists. Next, we explore an asteroid which could potentially collide with Earth in the not so distant future. Finally,  Andrew Shepherd joins Dan to track the collision path of the world's largest iceberg.

We then answer your questions, Elodie wants to know why we laugh and Dr. Colin Bull from Stirling University answer's Ashton's question: How do fish breathe underwater?

Dangerous Dan continues, where we learn all about the endangered Blue-Spotted Tree Monitor.

In Battle of the Sciences, Dr. Christelle Langley explains the power of the brain and why cognitive neuroscience is the best kind of science.

What do we learn about?

·     An asteroid hurtling towards Earth

·    Tracking the collision path of the world's largest iceberg.

·     How do fish breathe underwater?

·     The dangers of the Blue-Spotted Tree Monitor

·     And in Battle of the Sciences, the power of brain!

Hello, welcome along to a brand new Fun Kids Science Weekly. This is the only podcast that has a real search of the solar system that finds any science secrets squirreling away within. My name is Dan, and let's get to it.

0:15.8

This week, we'll answer some of your questions. You can always send them as a voice note to me on the free Fun Kids app.

0:21.6

And we're trying to find out how fish managed to breathe, even though they're, well, underwater.

0:28.6

Like us, fish have to get oxygen.

0:32.6

And rather like we have our own lungs, they have an organ, a special part of their body that is specifically

0:39.2

designed to get as much oxygen out the water as possible, and that's called their gills.

0:44.2

Also, our battle of the sciences this week takes us into the world of cognitive neuroscience,

0:49.3

so it's all about your brain and why it thinks the way it does.

0:53.7

And your brain is one of the most amazing things in your body.

0:56.8

It's like a super powerful computer that controls absolutely everything you do, from breathing

1:01.6

to walking, thinking and feeling.

1:03.8

And we're climbing trees in Indonesia to track down our dangerous Dan beast this week.

1:09.6

So let's get going with a brand new Fun Kids Science Weekly.

1:15.9

And we start with your science in the news. A badly burnt scroll from the Roman town of Herculaneum has been

1:24.3

digitally unwrapped, providing the first look at what's written inside for 2,000 years.

1:29.8

Now, the document, which looks like a big lump of charcoal, really, was charred by the volcanic eruption

1:35.5

of Mount Vesuvius back in 79 AD, and is too fragile to ever be physically opened.

1:42.6

But scientists have done something really incredible. They've used

1:45.2

a combination of x-ray imaging and artificial intelligence to like virtually unfurl it. They've managed

1:52.3

to scan it even though it's tightly packed in and they can read it on the computer, revealing rows and

1:58.8

columns of texts. Now some letters are already very visible in this ancient

2:04.6

scroll, and the team believes it's a work of philosophy, but they do say that more work is needed
