relief. This one falls somewhere in between. An account shaped by fear, guilt, unanswered questions,

and a lifetime of feeling followed by something he never invited but always sensed. And he was

born in 1976. And from the very beginning,

his life wasn't supposed to exist.

His mother had survived cancer years earlier and had been told she'd never carry another child.

Medicine wasn't what it is now.

No high-resolution imaging, no advanced prenatal monitoring, so when she became pregnant,

doctors doubted it from the start. But despite their hesitation, despite their warnings that there was no detectable life,

something pushed through, a heartbeat hiding where no one expected one. A spirit, his mother would

later say, determined to arrive. He was delivered by emergency caesarian section, a frantic moment of surgeons arguing over readings, nurses

bracing for tragedy, and then a wailing newborn, filling the room with life. The doctors
