Good morning. I'm Jake Sherwin. Welcome to the daily punch brought to my phone

news. It is Monday Monday, January 29th,

2024. Let's get into the mix. Here are your Washington headlines of the day. Number one, border

and taxes. Congress continues to spar. Number two, widening Middle East conflict creates a new

test for Biden and Congress. And number three, a key House committee will impeach

Alejandro Mayorkas this week. Let's get into it. So the House is back. The Senate is returning

from their weekend, a long weekend, as it always is for the U.S. Senate. And three big

issues, or two big legislative issues, at least, that Congress is going to have to deal with the border.

So the border supplemental, it's a mess in the Senate, as we know last week.

But this border and national security supplemental is coming to a head this week. We said that last week,

but it's also coming to a head this week as well. When the Senate left town last week, they were

coming off of a very difficult episode in which Mitch McConnell basically laid out the political

reality around the border package, seeming to back away from it and then

later embraced it when he had a, I don't know about an uprising, but issues with the Senate

Republican conference. So the point that we make this morning is that is can McConnell and

Lankford move ahead with this package without majority Republican support, majority support among

Senate Republicans. A very difficult issue for McConnell, who wants to win back the Senate
