Tell us about what it was like for you when you visited the border back during the Trump years.

Well, I have been visiting the border for several years, even before the current border crisis.

And so it was interesting to go down to the border during Trump because his policies were

pushing people back into Mexico, remain in Mexico, if you remember that policy, and some other ones called metering.

And so I was able to really sit down with immigrants and learn that they were going home.

They weren't going to remain in Mexico.

They were going to go home.

And so you could see from the, you know, in the calculus of migrant thinking,

how U.S. policy really played on the decision-making processes under Trump and then later

under Biden. You could see the same see the very same processes at work.

So it's not just immigrants, though, that are thinking about whether they should come to the border or not.

There are people who have businesses based on this whole concept of smuggling people.

They're also thinking about things, right?

Well, yeah, this is big business. When the U.S. government decides to open the spigot or close

the spigot, it matters to the illicit businesses down there, the cartels, the smuggling organizations,

because they're going to cash in.

I met a smuggling guide for La Linenia cartel in O'Hanaga, Mexico one time, and he agreed to be

interviewed, and the guy was, you know, filthy rich in a very short period of time, just smuggling groups over.
