Summary

Sam Leith's guest in this week’s Book Club podcast is one of the most popular living thriller writers. Karin Slaughter has made her native Georgia her fictional territory, and she joins Sam as she launches a new series set in a whole new county, with the book We Are All Guilty Here. They talk 'planning versus pantsing', what it means to write violence against women as a woman and how becoming the showrunner for television compares to the sovereignty of the novelist.

Karen, I'm very cautious of describing the book in any way because I don't want to give any

1:11.7

any spoilers. Could you maybe introduce a bit what we're all guilty here's set up is for the

1:17.4

lessons? It's really hard to talk about without giving too much away. I guess the easy thing

1:22.6

is something really bad happens and by the end you know who did it. But it's hard. It's about young girls and

1:30.1

women, and we meet a very young teenage girl in the very first chapter who is waiting for her

friend, and it's Fourth of July in the southern part of the United States, in Georgia, where I'm

from. It's very hot. The sun's beating down, and the fireworks show starts,

1:48.8

and then something bad happens to them.
