Hey everyone. Welcome back to Cubicle CEO, the podcast where we ask successful entrepreneurs,

0:11.3

the business questions you can't Google. I'm your host, Ellen Yin, and today I'll be answering

0:16.2

a question that's been top of mind for a lot of you since we announced our pivot to becoming a media

0:22.0

business back in summer of 2022. Now, I know this term media company or media business can be

0:28.6

confusing to a lot of you. And you're not alone. Trust me, I myself felt very unsure of exactly

0:34.4

how to define a media company back when I made this original pivot. And in fact,

0:38.8

a lot of people to this day when I say I'm a media company founder or I founded a media company,

0:44.1

they either stare blankly or they assume that I'm a social media manager or running some sort of

the accountant, to explain a surplus to him. And he basically says, explain this to me like I'm five.

1:12.8

explanation possible of what a media company is. Now, one of the definitions that I found

1:18.3

actually on the internet, I feel like really sums it up well in a very simplified way.

1:22.8

So I'm going to read it to you. In short, we can define a media company as a business that creates and

1:28.7

distributes content through both traditional and digital channels. So as you can tell,

1:35.4

media companies can exist in both forms. In traditional forms of media, which include things

1:39.7

like radio, broadcast, newspapers, magazines, etc cetera, as well as new forms of media across digital

1:48.8

channels like YouTube or podcasting or blogs, newsletters, right? All of those things are digital

1:57.2

channels. Of course, we exist right now as a digital media company. Our two main products

2:04.5

are our podcast and our newsletter. And that is another thing that I feel like is something

2:11.4

that may help you better understand what a media company is. If you think about most businesses,
