My interview with a candidate for Hawaii's first congressional district, Kaniyella Ing.

A member of the Honolulu chapter of the DSA, Kaniyella has been a legislator in the Hawaii

House of Representatives since 2012, rising to majority policy director in that body.

In 2016, when most of the state establishment endorsed Hillary, Kaniyella was one of a handful

of politicians to endorse Bernie Sanders, who went on to win the Hawaii caucuses with

over 71% of the vote.

He is a millennial coming in at 29 years old.

Who are you?

I'm Kaniyella Saito Ing.

I'm pretty much an unlikely politician.

So I don't come from money or power.

Neither my parents went to college or their grandparents.

My mom was a, she was a shoe clerk at like a macy's and my dad was a server.

He's a union member at a hotel.

So we didn't have much.
