Joe and Elaine Gary, along with her children, eldest daughter Brenda, along with two brothers, middle son Joey, and youngest son Mikey, resided in this stunningly beautiful Pacific Northwest in the city of

Kent, Washington. Joe and Elaine specifically moved there in an effort to give

their children a safe and secure place to live, as it felt like the perfect place to raise a family.

But sometime in 1982 or so, a thing started happening that shattered their once safe community.

Women, particularly sex workers, were being picked up ostensibly for their services and they were being

murdered and dumped along Washington State's Green River.

Now the Green River is this amazing winding river that is 65 miles or 105

kilometers long, one end

empties into the Duamish River,

eventually leading into Puget Sound.

And a part of the river does indeed wind through the city of Kent.

And this was concerning to the Gary family.

It started becoming a regular thing for people living in the area to come home in the evenings,

turn on the local news, and here of yet another young woman being discovered dumped along the Green River.

Eventually, one victim turned up way too close to home for the Garies,

no more than two miles away.

And that was enough for them to decide that they needed to move away from the area.

We can't live like this.

There is this serial killer going around killing young women. We can't be near this.

Dad Joe was very, very protective of his family.

He had been a former police officer and he taught his children how to be tough, how to use

a gun if they needed to.
