the reason patriotism sounds strange and old-fashioned and weird is because we live in a global society where we are dealing with global existential threats like climate change and war and like where it's not just a country is being affected,

it's vast regions are being affected and that shifts your perspective from just looking within your borders to, okay, how are we doing as a species, which seems much more important at this moment.

And I think the way I can tie that to some version of liberal patriotism is that, especially

as Americans, because our country has this outsized influence, we have to take responsibility for the fact that it does

and take responsibility for the fact that how America goes impacts the entire world in a way that it shouldn't but it does. And so taking

that responsibility is well where can I make change in my little corner of the

earth so that globally we are headed in a better direction and of

course everyone in the world can think about that in their own corner of the earth

but as Americans you have to take responsibility for the fact that we are way
