Summary

BONUS. As Pip Hare nears the finish line of the 2020 Vendee Globe Race, she checks in with us from the Bay of Biscay. Pip has been a professional sailor for over 25 years and broke into solo ocean racing a decade ago. Andy got to interview Pip as she prepared for the race in 2019 and we are so happy to bring that conversation full circle as she nears the finish line. On top of her wonderful videos and blog posts throughout this Vendee Globe, she has been sailing an outstanding race in a 20-year-old, non-foiling boat. It was her birthday just a few days ago and she wrote: "I first dreamed of competing in this race when I was 17 years old. I am now 47. Never stop chasing your dreams. I have so many more ambitions and am excited to find out who I will be at 57." Thanks Pip!

Hello to all the listeners of the On the Wind podcast. My name is Pip Hare and you are currently joining me in the Bay of Biscay on board medallia in the final 120 miles of the Vonde Glover Race.

Welcome to this last minute bonus episode of On the Wind with Pip hair.

0:22.7

Pip and her team were so generous to send us a 10-minute recording just this morning as

0:27.4

Pip and her boat medallia close in on the Vonday Globe finish line. As I look at the

0:32.1

tracker now, just around 1815 UTC, Pip is just over 50 nautical miles from the finish.

0:39.7

She's currently ranked in 19th place, very close behind the two foiling boats finishing this evening ahead of her.

0:46.4

I've been following Pip's race especially closely these past few months.

0:50.7

On top of her wonderful videos and blog posts, she has sailed an outstanding race in a relatively old, non-foiling boat.

0:58.6

Pip will talk about this later in the recording she sent us from the Bay of Biscay, but she did not have the funding or the time that many other yachts did in this race.

1:07.8

What she has is remarkable skill, incredible strength, and years of experience putting

1:12.3

boats together with what she has in front of her. She's been a professional sailor for over 25

1:17.8

years and broke into solo ocean racing a decade ago. It was her birthday just a few days ago, and she

1:24.4

wrote, I first dreamed of competing in this race when I was 17 years old.

1:29.5

I am now 47. Never stop chasing your dreams. I have so many more ambitions and I'm excited to find out

1:36.5

who I will be at 57. So thank you again, Pip, for your incredible race, your incredible communication, sharing these thoughts with us,

1:46.2

and being an inspiration to so many. So yeah, I'm going to play the rest of PIP Hairs recording

1:52.9

that she sent us today, and we'll all be cheering her on to the finish line tonight.

1:58.5

And after this recording that she sent us today, I'm going to replay an interview

2:04.0

that Andy did with Pip on her boat in 2019 as she prepared for the 2020 Vonde Glob. So we'll get to

2:11.1

bring it full circle there. And yeah, after a quick word from our sponsor for this season,

2:16.6

you're going to hear Pip Hare on her Amoka 60 medallia.

2:21.7

This season of On the Wind is sponsored exclusively by Dakota Lithium, a lithium battery company based out of North Dakota where the winters can get cold.
