Every four years we get to choose a new or continuing president of the United States.

This year will definitely be a new president, but will it be President

Kamala Harris, breaking the long tradition of having white male chief executives, or will it

be a return for Donald Trump becoming the only president in history since

Grover Cleveland way back in 1892 to lose a race for the presidency and then to come back and

win a race for the presidency to serve two non-consecutive terms. To put that in perspective,

it is a great pleasure to welcome Pete Wainer back to the show. He is a contributing writer

at the Atlantic. He is a senior fellow at the Trinity Forum. And his books include The Death

of Politics as City of Man, Religion and Politics in a New Era, and Wealth and Justice, the morality of democratic capitalism.

He has been a longtime conservative activist and a Republican strategist, and he was formerly a speechwriter for

President George W. Bush. Pete, we've spoken before, and it's not a secret that you believe

that the Republican Party needs to chart a future that is different from the MAGA perspective.

And the core question I wanted to get out with you was that, depending on what happens tomorrow,

do you think it would be easier to rebuild the Republican Party into a more

successful and worthy model based upon the glories of its past, that it would be easier

to rebuild the Republican Party if Trump loses tomorrow or if he wins tomorrow?

I think it'd be easier if he loses.

I think there has to be a repudiation of him and of the MAGA philosophy.

And, you know, the Republicans have tolerated a lot because Trump has lost, or Republicans

have lost during his watch quite a lot.

But I think the combination of a loss now along his age may move the Republican Party
