Summary

Unfortunately we had a scheduling snafu with recording for this week, so we are sharing a bonus episode that we sent to our Patrons a few months back. It's a conversation between David, Tim, and Heidi about Hemingway's famous story, "A Clean Well-lighted Place." Conversation touched on the difficulty with Hemingway and his particular craftsmanship in this short story.

Thanks for your patience! The regular show will be back soon.

Hello and welcome back to Close Reeds here on the Close Reads Podcast Network. I'm David Kern.

0:05.1

So I need to apologize because we had a bit of a scheduling snafu with getting everybody to be

0:11.8

able to be together and just a lot of things going on for all the different people involved

0:15.0

in Close Reeds this week. So whereas we were normally going to, or originally rather,

0:19.8

going to begin reading The Rector of Justin,

0:22.9

we were going to do the first five chapters. We've got to punt that to next week. That means that we

0:28.7

are going to have to kind of have an interstitial episode here. So I apologize for the inconvenience of

0:33.4

that. Hopefully you'll look at it like it just gives you a little extra time to get ahead on your

0:37.3

reading. But what I'm going to do this week is we wanted to run an episode that we recorded

0:41.3

for our Patreon supporters a few months ago. It's an episode where Heidi and Tim and I discussed

0:46.6

Ernest Hemingway's A Clean Well Lighted Place. Honestly, it's one of our favorite episodes we ever did.

0:51.8

The three of us all agreed on that, that it was just one of the conversations that we enjoyed the most. A lot of people have a hard time with Hemingway.

0:58.0

A lot of people have a hard time with this story. And so we dove into some of the reasons why

1:01.7

that's the case. And it's a great story. So we were able to dive into the nuances and the

1:07.7

craftsmanship of this story, as well as talking about Hemingway more generally.

1:13.1

For those of you who are supporters of the show, you know, if you want to re-listen, we will

1:17.7

certainly accept that. Thank you so much for supporting the show. For those of you who are

1:22.5

not, this is kind of a little bit of a bonus episode for you. It's a taste of what you get

1:26.5

over on the subscribers episodes. Later on this month, we have another short story conversation coming.

1:32.5

And in the months since we recorded this, we also recorded a conversation about an

1:35.9

Agatha Christie short story, a Nathaniel Hawthorne short story. So there's lots of good content

1:40.9

over there. And I guess just consider this, our apology for not being able to get you what was originally planned this week.
