Howdy and welcome to a bonus episode of Wise About Texas. This is Ken Wiseies your host. Thanks for tuning in today. This

bonus episode has to do with the Mexican invasion of Texas in 1842. In the

last episode about Matthew Old Paint Caldwell. I mentioned that invasion in the subsequent

Battle of Salado Creek where Caldwell and Jack Hayes fended off General Adrian Wall and his army, but not before they took prisoners.

And so I was reminded by a former judicial colleague of mine about a couple of interesting facts about that invasion

with respect to the district courts.

So I thought I'd tell you about that.

In a reminder for you, it's September 1842.

And General Adrian Wall marches north from the Rio Grande

takes a circuitous route and was not detected

until they were just on the outskirts of San Antonio and they didn't realize,

the citizens of San Antonio didn't realize how close the Mexican army was until they were

greeted by a cannon shot early one foggy morning.

But what prompted this bonus episode is if you look at the district court minutes of Bear County in 1842, and it's Bear County Minute Book B, as in Boy, and it's

on page 43.

The date was September 9, 1842.

Court had been in session in Bear County for, in San Antonio for four days.

And there were several indictments handed down. This is page 43 several indictments

multiple indictments for cattle theft and then there it sets a hearing for the following day September 10th

and that's where the minutes end. There was a lawyer in town named William Early

Jones and he recorded his recollections of what

happened and rumors were rampant that the Mexican Army was just outside of
