Summary

I respond to a recent article in the New York Times highlighting revised guidelines on managing PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). The article states there is no solid evidence to suggest that dieting has any significant impact on symptoms. However, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Mentioned in this episode:

Does the PCOS Diet Work?

International Evidence-based Guideline for the assessment and management of polycystic ovary syndrome

Weight management strategies for patients with PCOS

Lifestyle management in polycystic ovary syndrome – beyond diet and physical activity

Hello this is Monica Reinagle and I'm here with a little bonus content for nutrition diva listeners because I wanted to respond to an

0:16.5

article that was in the New York Times a couple of weeks ago and really got a lot of attention

0:22.2

but I think may have slightly misrepresented what I see anyway

0:27.3

as the science that they were talking about.

0:30.3

0:37.0

on managing Polysistic Overy Syndrome or PCOS.

dietary approach such as a low-carb diet for the treatment of PCOS. My issue here is that this Times article seemed to

1:17.4

suggest that pursuing weight loss is no longer recommended for PCOS patients who have overweight or obesity.

1:26.0

In that article there's a registered dietician who specializes in PCOS care

1:31.0

quoted as saying, the link between sustained weight loss and improved symptoms

1:36.1

is not very clear or well established.

1:40.0

And she's right that we don't have much data on the long-term impact of weight loss on PCOS.

1:48.0

But you know what? Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

1:55.0

Scientific review conducted in 2021 found that weight loss is associated

2:00.0

with improved metabolic, endocrine, reproductive, cardiovascular, and psychological features in women with PCOS.

2:09.0

So I think it's a bit premature to conclude that weight management has no role to play in the treatment of PCOS.
