I'm Elvis Mitchell.

He was born Paul Houston, but for over four decades, he's been Bono of the cultural phenomenon, U2.

His lives have been boiled down to a one-person show, Bono, Stories of Surrender, which is now a film on Apple TV Plus.

And Bono joined me for a face-to-face interview at the Cannes Film Festival at my conversation space,

the Elvis Suite, to talk about that film.

Of course, what rock and roll conversation wouldn't start with William Blake.

In both of the book and the movie, you talk about Blake, but here's the thing.

I always thought Blake is being a punk, one of the original punks.

But unlike the punks of your era, he's a romantic punk.

You know, and that idea of embracing purity, but issuing tradition and institutions.

And I feel like that's the way you connect with him.

He was also in the first multimedia artist, remember?

The painting?

Oh, yeah, yeah, of course.

You know, anyone can draw well.

But very few people can scraggle and scribble and splurge.

He's definitely a proto hippie punk.

And what I think he permissions, if you follow him around and try to hold on to his coattails in history is it's okay to be a bit dizzy.

It's okay the derangement of the senses, in one sense, is okay.
