Summary

The bold Chiefs do it again moving up from the 9th pick to number 6 to draft the "smooth" Monsoor Delane out of LSU.  This gifted corner is expected to be a much more impactful corner than Trent McDuffie and will save the team $80 million over the next four years versus their former CB1.  And wait until you hear him.  He's got natural leader written all over him.  Long gone are the days of sitting and just drafting the highest rated player on the board.  These championship caliber Chiefs are relentless in getting the player they need.  And they did it again.    Delane was surprised and thrilled but the second happiest man Thursday was defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo who had a rough off season watching his player let go to make more money elsewhere.    KU is borrowing even more money to run their athletics department and it feels more and more like how DC works.    We have some incredible listener emails to share that could bring a tear to your eye and/or make you laugh.    The SPLC scam is particularly alarming to Ron Freeman, author of the book "Rethinking Race."   He shares his thoughts.    And we have a song for you to finish up that's fitting based on one of the stories we featured about my childhood earlier in the week.

Well, we told you earlier in the week that Steve Spagnolo, the Chiefs defensive coordinator, was having a bad off season.

0:19.7

And by that, I mean this.

0:21.2

He's a complete another professional. He's not moping around, not complaining, not whining,

0:26.2

but he let it be known to his organization that he was not pleased, despite the fact that he

0:31.4

loves it here. He's making a pile of money, and there's been great success. He was not pleased

0:34.6

that they just gutted his defense. And the pieces that remain

0:38.1

are pretty old like Chris Jones. So look, he's not the squeaky wheel. He didn't run around the

0:43.8

entire offseason saying, boy, if you don't do this, if you don't do that, it was never going

0:47.5

to be a chemistry problem. It was not one of those kinds of things. But it was very apparent that

0:51.9

Steve Spagnolo, the Chief's defensive coordinator, was hurt this offseason and thought, wow, okay, this is the way we're going to go. We're going to completely revamp the offense. We're going to get a running game. We're going to change things from homes. And all my players that I've coached for four or five years here that I've gotten into positions where they're really good at what they do, we're not going to pay them. You're going to trade them away or let them go. Okay, nice. So you had to think it wasn't a personal thing for Steve Spagnolo on Thursday night, but certainly an organizational thing that they heard him loud and clear. The chiefs were going to have no chance of stopping anybody if they don't get really serious about fixing their defense. They have signed a couple of free agents that will help,

1:31.4

certainly. And they made a big splash in the NFL draft in round one, trading up for

1:36.7

Mansour Delane out of LSU. Before that, he was at Virginia Tech. This is a player that they expect

1:43.4

to be much better than Trent McDuffie.

1:46.7

Trent McDuffie was a very good corner for the Chiefs.

1:50.3

It's going to say, Monsour Delane is going to be about over the next four years,

1:53.9

it's going to be close to $80, $85 million cheaper than it would have been to have

1:58.7

Trent McDuffie on here.

2:00.2

And remember, there are some dial-up

2:02.7

blitzes. There are some assignments that corners need to learn. But corner is the easiest position

2:07.2

to plug somebody in. Most assignments, you see that guy, cover him. That's it. That's most of being a

2:14.1

cornerback is, you see that guy right there, Cover him. And Monsour Delane is ready for
