All right, welcome back, friend of Jerry episode 48. Yes, 48 special guest here today. We've been chatting for a while on Instagram. Bob Marriay. Did I say that right, Bob? You said it right, absolutely. Bob, so we started interacting on Instagram a little while back. I'm interested. How did you find me? Now you're the one with almost a million followers. Yeah, I don't know how this works. Brandon Novak is how we found each other and mutual friends. And when you did, you had Brandon on. By the way, eight years sober yesterday for Brandon. So a big shout out to him. And that's how we make contact. There's a longer story that I can tell you about other bar stool people that I know, but that's in the professional aspect. But that's how it happened. Now, I guess we've been on and out. I think it's been over, I'd say, 20 months I've known you. I could go back to say exactly. Apparently, my cat wants to talk to me and I'm a dog died, but my dog died on June 13th of last year. And I still can't do it again. I can't do that again. Is this back to say that you're both your parents passed and it was terrifying but my dog dying had more of an impact on me and I had like great parents. It's kind of fucked up. So a lot of people say that. I know I had one dog pass and you know and they're looking back it hurt from a lot of um other standpoints just like waking up and he's just like he's not there you know what I mean he's just you can't take him for a walk you can't okay when it's time for bed to give him a treat it's just you know it's tough I wanted to know that though I come home and yell my dogs name out still wow that's what I'm there though. Bob, I wanted to ask now, I was doing some research like a while back. Like you said, I think this was about a year ago, maybe a little over when I was like taking a deep dive into your stuff and amazing what you have accomplished and what you still do. I really respect, you know, every day, how you're so willing to help people. I want to get into the sober coach aspect. How did that come about for you? It's kind of interesting. Like I'm a trained interventionist and that's how this business started for me. 12 years ago I went and got trained and after that training you, you know, okay, so I have some skills now and there's a huge difference, you know, I'm in I'm a member of a fellowship that, you know, I'm not at the level of press radio and films, but you can find it at the front of the phone book. And it would, you know, people say, well, that's a 12 step call. This is not I'm a professional. I'm paid to go into a situation where, you know, the person's either, they're in rough shape. Like, I intervened on me, my family after probably a good 12 years of needing to do it or even 15, and I'm a big family, and I don't know what the family dynamics in you, it was an intervention had to happen. And once that happened, it changed, you know use words like, I can change the trajectory of someone's recovery. And that's through the coaching aspect of it. And then as I said, it morphed into, I trained as an interventionist, but the reality is, we used to, and I'm 19 years old, or January 3rd, 2004 is my sobriety. When I went to treatment, I went to a detox in Southern California and a hospital detox and then my family came to get me and I'm from Montreal, Canada and two of my brothers. Like I'm so self-centered and low self-esteem, but my two brothers show up after I've had a drug accident. I hate going into like the lower details about what happened, but you can sort of connect the dots. It's funny how those two like go together. Yeah, and my, you know, my brothers have kids and families and I'm like, I'm so absolutely no regard for anyone other than me, no matter what's being done and not thinking of the stresses I've caused for years at home. And, you know, I, this is a long answer I'm giving you, but I think it deserved to hear it. And then ultimately I got home and when I arrived, I came through, we flew from Los Angeles to New York and New York to Burlington, Vermont at the time I was, my family was worried about me landing in the Canada and clearing customs Canadian Canadian customs at the airport because I was, I was a fucking mess, you know, I was John this, I was, and I'm like minimalizing how bad it was telling, you know, my poor mother met me at the door and it was so like I think of it now, my mom, I arrived home, it was a long day, by the time I got home, it was like 12 30 at night on a Friday night or early Saturday morning and my poor mother meets me with, you know, we're men to have mothers and, you know, I think I'm a cool guy and my poor mother. |
