Summary

First, Hollywood strikes throttle on, despite recent talks between AMPTP and WGA, complicating industry plans for the season ahead.  What will this mean for upcoming film festivals and fall television?

Then, Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse, discusses the latest on the work stoppages, and the (spooky) current state of Hollywood. But it’s not all horror talk with one of our leading experts on the genre — the powerhouse producer has advice on amplifying profitability across the industry.

From KCRW, I'm Kim Masters, and this is the business.

One of Hollywood's more outspoken citizens, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum, joins us once again

0:10.7

to share his take on the ongoing strikes. He has thoughts on what's wrong and what needs to

0:15.8

change, including the approach to compensation that's been adopted in the streaming era.

0:20.3

I don't think it's a Netflix problem. It's a streaming model problem. The idea of buying out

0:26.0

talent up front, no matter how the thing they make performs, is a goofy way to make shows and

0:31.4

movies, for sure. That is not just Netflix. That's all streamers. Blum talks about the streamers'

0:36.7

reluctance to share data with

0:38.1

creatives, how he thinks the model should change and why he thinks the distribution of wealth,

1:12.7

AMPTP came out with a suggestion and the WGA didn't immediately say it's trash, you're the

1:20.6

worst people in the world. So people were like, hey, maybe there's movement. And then it just

1:25.2

seemed to kind of go away. Yeah, I mean, they're still talking. So it's not like all hope is lost. But this is one of those where, unless you're in the room, it's so hard to read into this. And now we're in the situation where we're heading into the fall season. And things that normally happen in the fall are going to look very different. First and foremost is this fall film festival season, which kicks off with the Venice Film Festival

1:50.4

and then the Tell You Ride Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival.

1:54.6

And SAG did some interesting stuff this past week.
